Papaphilia, the solo project of Fjorn Butler, aurally interrogates the aesthetics of political representation in the contemporary colonial context - a culture of obedience to the imaginary of racial and sexual supremacy. She is one third of deep psychedelic improvised electronic trio Gurner with Emma Albury (Eko Eko Azarak, Leopard Leg) and Sharryn Koppens (Dick Threats).

In audio format Papaphilia morphs samples of vocalizations of exaltation and sensuality from RnB, disco, pop and traditional pop and folk standards into an experimental electronic and musique concrète palette. Stoned rhythms and backwashed synths are accelerated into the pace, patterns and intonations drawn from 90s dance music cultures, switching from dubstep to techno to slopped out deep house.

Her current releases include 4 Animals Dream of a Shadow on Nice Music and À L’état Brut on Happy Endin’, which together are a two-part exploration of sound and rhythm as a durational political opening that can be collectively embodied, one which resonates in sensorial disorientation.
